OMG the debt ceiling! It’s overrrrrrrr!

“OMG the debt ceiling! It’s overrrrrrrr!”

Well, sort of…

The US debt crisis wrangling in D.C. is crass, concocted political theater to keep the global masses scared and distracted, opening the door to yet more disaster kapitalism. Just watch: the ceiling will be raised at the 11th hour and Uncle Sam will continue to borrow and spend his way into the compost heap of history, yet another iteration of the patterns of the past (Rome, Spain, Britain, et al.) Today, Greece is just a prelude to the inevitable coming attraction.

Our job now, as intelligent beings who clearly see the game they’re playing, is to start getting creative about how we’re going to organize our communities & social affairs.

One place to begin is at the philosophical and macro-economic levels. This site is chock full of excellent free resources (ebooks, MP3 audiobooks, journals and pamphlets) to get your gears turning:  libertyactivism.info

At the personal, micro-economic level, begin to apply permaculture principles at home in your immediate community: permacultureprinciples.com

Together, these two concepts are truly ECO-nomics and I believe that they go hand-in-hand.

For some of you, either of these concepts may be a whole new realm of experience & understanding, but as the collapse of current paradigm shows us, the system we have now is just not sustainable at all. Society needs to set out on a bold new path. Let’s start exploring, learning, networking and applying – sustainably, cooperatively, and non-violently.

Spring 2011: Welcome to the United States of Austerity

Over the past 4 or so years that I’ve been following their free economic forecasts, GEAB‘s quarterly reports have rarely been wrong.

Here’s their latest free issue. The information concerning the coming 6 months may be shocking to those who have not been following the dots closely…

The Global systemic crisis – Spring 2011: Welcome to the United States of Austerity / Towards a very serious breakdown of the world economic and financial system

As anticipated by LEAP/E2020 last February in the GEAB No. 42, the second half of 2010 is really characterized by a sudden worsening of the crisis marked by the end of the illusion of recovery maintained by Western leaders (1) and the thousands of billions swallowed up by the banks and the economic « stimulation » plans of no lasting effect. The coming months will reveal a simple, yet especially painful reality: the Western economy, and in particular that of the United States (2), never really came out of recession (3). The startling statistics recorded since summer 2009 have only been the short-lived consequences of a massive injection of liquidity into a system which had essentially become insolvent just like the US consumer (4). At the heart of the global systemic crisis since its inception, the United States is, in the coming months, going to demonstrate that it is, once again, in the process of leading the economy and global finances into the « heart of darkness » (5) because it can’t get out of this « Very Great US Depression (6) ». Thus, coming out of the political upheavals of the US elections next November, with growth once again negative, the world will have to face the « Very Serious Breakdown » of the global economic and financial system founded over 60 years ago on the absolute necessity of the US economy never being in a lasting recession. Now the first half of 2011 will dictate that the US economy take an unprecedented dose of austerity plunging the planet into new financial, monetary, economic and social chaos (7).

The Simpler Way

In this provocative and engaging essay, Ted Trainer critiques the Transition Towns movement and posits that a much more radical approach will be required if our individual communities are expected to survive the transition. Rather than narrowly focusing on energy, local food systems, and recycling schemes, Trainer says that the entire for-profit capitalist system must be jettisoned in order to provide any hope that Earth’s 7 billion human inhabitants will be able to succeed on a planet that is already experiencing resource overshoot.

THE SIMPLER WAY: WORKING FOR TRANSITION FROM CONSUMER SOCIETY TO A SIMPLER, MORE COOPERATIVE, JUST AND ECOLOGICALLY SUSTAINABLE  SOCIETY

by Ted Trainer

Excerpt:

We have to build a local economy, not a national or globalised economy, an economy designed to meet needs, not to maximise profits, an economy under participatory social control and not driven by corporate profit, and one guided by rational planning as distinct from leaving everything to the market. This is the antithesis of capitalism, markets, profit motivation and corporate control. Nothing could be more revolutionary. If we don’t plunge into building such an economy we will probably not survive in the coming age of scarcity. The Transition Towns movement will come to nothing of great significance if it does not set itself to build such economies. Either your town will get control of its own affairs and organise local productive capacity to provide for you, or it will remain within and dependent on the mainstream economy.

In other words, the goal here is to build that Economy B, a new local economy enabling the people who live in the town to guarantee the provision of basic necessities by applying their labour, land and skills to local resources…all under our control. The old Economy A can then drop dead and we will still be able to provide for ourselves. This kind of vision and goal is not evident in the TT literature and reports I have read. There is no concept of setting out to eventually run the town economy for the benefit of the people via participatory means.
